On A Wish And A Train
There is an old superstition that says if you make a wish and don’t speak while you traverse a railway bridge, your wish will come true.
So what travel dream would you wish for?
At Railway Adventures, we are always imagining new and wonderful journeys, even if they don’t make it to our final list of tours. We realise that reading about exotic rail trips is also half the fun of deciding on your next grand adventure! And we also understand that unlike airline travel, the experience of a train journey is often more important than the destination.
Our current ‘dreaming’ include everything from the romance of steam locomotives to the thrill of high speed.
We imagine listening to Tchaikovsky’s 2nd Symphony and sipping on a bowl of steaming hot borsch while travelling on the Trans Siberian Railway.
Letting time slip by on the slow motion Toy Train from Kalka to Shimla on the Himalaya Mountain Railway, through forests and tea plantations with snow-capped mountains on the horizon.
Rubbing shoulders with Michael Palin and the Queen of England, both of whom love the views on the line from Coleraine to Londonderry.
For others, their dream journey is a memory, the trip of a lifetime. This is true for many of our clients, who make lifelong friends on our tours and meet up to relive their experience.
The Viceroy Special in Sri Lanka is one that stirs rich memories. It passes through such rich and exotic landscapes, which is not surprising when you learn that the country boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. (in fact, on our testimonials page, two of our passengers that enjoyed the trip in 2014 commented: “At least 5 stars all the way. It can’t get better than this!”
For others, it’s the colder climates that have the strongest allure, as they are so different to the climate of Australia. Scandinavia in summer gives you the best of both worlds, as you travel through Lapland, venture beyond the Arctic Circle on the Ofoten line and spend two nights in atmospheric Trondheim which has a wonderful railway heritage.
The array of rail adventures available in 2018 is awe-inspiring.
